Piano and Wind Quartet
Beethoven, the ultimate master of the theme and variation form, finishes his youthful op.11 trio with a set of variations on an air taken from a popular opera of the day, whilst Camille Saint-Saëns takes a Danish folk song as the basis for the virtuosic variations that finish his Caprice. The relatively unknown work of André Caplet has at it’s heart a melody of arresting and haunting beauty that makes his early death from injuries sustained during war so poignantly and heartbreakingly regrettable.
